“Dressing down” for Charity

July 12, 2019

Somewhere on the outskirts of Napanee, on the right side of Hwy 2, is a little haven for our wild, furry friends; the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre (SPWC). Since 1994, the SPWC has been helping thousands of injured and orphaned birds and animals and releasing them back into the wild once they’re ready. Not only does the centre provide these animals with the medical attention and care they need, it offers advice and assistance to property owners on how to deal with wild animals in the most humane ways.

The Business of Cyber Security

July 11, 2019

Jean-Phillippe Décarie-Mathieu, head of cyber security with our Quebec Division, was recently interviewed by CTV News Montreal and the Canadian Press. He stressed the importance of having competent cyber security experts working in-house and acknowledged the difficulty involved in having a full-time specialist. Far too many small businesses lack the resources they require to protect themselves and their customers from cyber criminals. These businesses need to be better equipped with the people and tools necessary to combat ever-present threats.

The Walk of the World

July 4, 2019

More than 40,000 civilians, Armed Forces members and cadets from almost 60 countries will meet in Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, on July 16th to participate in the 103rd International Four Days Marches Nijmegen. Once a training program for Dutch troops years before the First World War began, the Nijmegen March, as some people call it, is now considered to be the world’s largest walking event. It offers a true challenge of physical and mental endurance for those who volunteer to participate.

Spring Forward

March 11, 2019

It may not look, or feel like it yet, but spring is just over 2 weeks away. The first true hint came yesterday when we all (well, hopefully everyone remembered to) turn our clocks ahead one hour.

This is also the perfect time to perform some other home maintenance tasks.  By associating clock changes with these basic chores you can help establish a routine, ensuring they’re done twice a year, and not overlooked.

Here’s a “spring forward” must-do list:

Change the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors.

Seeing the future through green-coloured glasses

February 11, 2019

Thursday, February 7th brought about a first for Commissionaires as our Newfoundland and Labrador Division drove away with its brand new 2019 Chevy Bolt Electric Vehicle. CEO Jim Lynch was presented the keys Thursday at an event held at the car dealership, Hickman Auto Group, in St. John’s. Among those present was St. John's Mayor Danny Breen, and members of the Commissionaires Board of Governors.

This electric car will now be a part of the Division’s Mobile Patrol fleet and will be used as part of its bylaw enforcement work with the City.

Cybersecurity is no longer a luxury

February 6, 2019

“Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don't let anybody else use it and get a new one every six months.” – Clifford Stoll

It’s hard to imagine a time when cybersecurity wasn’t a concern. Doing so is like trying to explain to millennials a rotary-dial was phone physically wired to the wall, and that email was only possible through 300 baud modems that caused busy signals for extended periods of time. In fact, cybersecurity is so important that yesterday’s Safer Internet Day comes on the heels of last week’s Data Privacy Day, and during DND’s National Security Awareness Week.

An appreciative client recognizes two NL Division commissionaires

January 10, 2019

This article was written by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (NL), an appreciative client of our Newfoundland and Labrador Division.

Meet Spencer Allen and Todd Jackson. Anyone who drives up to the North Atlantic Fisheries Center (NAFC) will definitely know their faces but you are probably not aware of their meaningful addition to the work force at DFO.

North Saskatchewan Division CEO to focus on his golf game

January 8, 2019

After 10 successful years with the Commissionaires, North Saskatchewan Division CEO Mike Cooper begins his retirement, today, catching up to his wife who retired last May.

Mike came to Commissionaires after an impressive 22-year career with the RCMP, and nine years with the Saskatchewan Provincial Government. He admits to knowing very little about Commissionaires and said as much when he faced the hiring panel tasked with hiring a new CEO of our North Saskatchewan Division.
